Croydon Poet Laureate
Shaniqua is a poet, writer, creative workshop facilitator, and was officially named Croydon’s first Poet Laureate in October 2020. In 2017, she was named Young Achiever of The Year at the Mayor of Croydon Civic Awards for her work with young people through Young People Insight. She was the Founding Director of Young People Insight CIC, a platform that empowers young people through creativity, conversation and writing, which was active from 2016-2021. As Croydon Poet Laureate, she facilitated a residency at the Museum of Croydon, working with young people from BAME backgrounds, leading to the creation of an online exhibition called Voices of Croydon. She wrote the lyrics for the London Mozart Players' Anthem for Peace, and wrote and performed a specially commissioned poem for the reopening of South London’s biggest arts centre, Fairfield Halls. She is currently a Trustee for Talawa Theatre Company, and one of the Directors of Croydon Community Leaders CIC.
